Tim Sullivan, a senior freestyler, won two events yesterday to lead UD High to the Catholic League swimming title with an 87-68 victory over defending champion Austin.
The 19 point victory gave U. of D. its first Catholic League crown and the second high school swimming title in the school's history. UD won its other swimming championship in 1957 as a member of the Public School League.
Tom Duffield was captain of the 1959 squad and competed in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle. Tom's younger brothers, Dick and Harry, contributed to give U-D 15 points.
Dick, a junior, won the 50 yard freestyle in 23.6 seconds, only 4 tenths of a second off the league record set by Benedectine's Tom Lees a year ago. Harry, a sophomore, posted a pair of third place finishes in the 200 and 400 yard freestyle.
UD RUSHES TO LEAD
Competing for the first time in the excellent facilities of Oakland Universityin Rochester, UD won 5 of 11 events and jolted Austin's hopes of a successful title defense in a hurry, taking the first three events plus a third-place finish for a 32 point cluster.
At that point Austin had 22 points. Then the defending champions reduced the deficit to a four point margin
Austin, an annual prep (36-32), the closest of the meet, when ace John Skantze won the 200-yard individual medley in a
pool record time of 2:12.7. The league record is 2:10.8 set by Jerry Gorski a year ago.
But from then on Austin's challenge was turned aside as U-D increased its lead in a field of 13 schools. De La Salle finished third with 41 points and Dearborn Sacred Heart fourth with 21. Then came Notre Dame's 17, Benedectine's 14 and Visitation's 12.
Austin and Visitation had monopolized the competition since the championships were inaugurated in 1954, each winning six championships. Austin set a record in taking the title five years in a row. It's first championship came in 1957. Visitation reigned in 1954-55-56-58-59-60.
ONE MARK TIED
The meets only other double winner was Skantze, who took the 100 yard backstroke in :59.1for Austin in addition to the individual medley.
While no league records were set, one former mark was tied. Sullivan was clocked in :51.8 seconds in the 100 yard freestyle, 4/10ths of a second slower than his league mark of :51.4 set in the trials last week. Last season Lees set the record at :51.8. Sullivan's other victory was a 1:59.9 in the 200 yard freestyle.

U-D High's coach Joe Paz, a social study teacher at Tappan Junior High who competed in the butterfly and freestyle on Western's 1954 PSL title squad said,
"Things seemed to be breaking just right for us. Our freestyle relay team qualified in fifth place but gained a third place finish in the finals and John Jastrezembski won the title on his last dive after trailing the pack."
Austin beat U-D 53-52 this season and each squad qualified 13 individuals for the title meet.
Jastrezermbski nipped Notre Dame's Mike Somyak by 65-100th's of a point. The U-D champion chalked up a 190.45 point total to Somyak's 189.90. The judges award one to 10 points and the award is multiplied by the degree of difficulty, ranging from 1.0 to 2.9 for low board diving.
U-D's othe individual winner was junior Steve Waszak, who contributed 11 points by winning the 100 yard butterfly in 58.5 seconds and third in the individual medley.
